My Tried and True Facemasks

I have acne prone, oily skin. One of the upsides to my freckles is they act as a natural camouflage, but not so much in the winter because no sun. But even with that, I am constantly trying to keep my skin clear. I may have turned 30, but my skin seems to have missed that memo and is acting like I am 13 still. My aching back, bags under my eyes, and 401K say otherwise.

I’ve tried a TON of face masks that claim to do different things, but I’ve found three that I keep in heavy rotation.  This is not without a lot of trial and error, and break outs due to some masks that didn’t mesh well with my skin.

If you noticed, I included NO sheet masks.  I find they don’t always cover your entire face, and can stick to parts of your face more than others.  I think masks that you apply yourself end up having better coverage, and give you more for you money.  You can pay an upwards of $15 for ONE SHEET MASK. ONE. That’s three Starbucks trips for a mask that may or may not actually cover your entire face/stick to the skin. Think about that the next time you’re at Sephora and they try to get you with that buy 3 get 1 free. THINK ABOUT WHY THEY ARE GIVING THEM AWAY. And now, for my favorites.

Peter Thomas Roth – Therapeutic Sulfur Mask $48

This is an acne specific mask, but I know wayyyy too many of us that are past the teenage years that still deal with that shit.  Its like, if I am using anti-aging skin products, I shouldn’t also have to use acne products, but here we are.  (I discovered it during Sephora’s Weekly Wows, which are weekly sales they put on.  You can get some great products for a FRACTION of the price. They change every Wednesday. You’re welcome.)

This mask works best for me as a spot treatment and is great for breakouts and problem areas.  A lot of people use it as a full face mask, but either way is great.  It clears up my acne pretty well and isn’t too hard on your skin.  Also there is a LOT of product and it goes a long way, so that helps to justify the price tag.  Plus, Peter Thomas Roth skincare is AMAZING.  Absolutely worth the buy.

GLAMGLOW Supermud Activated Charcoal Treatment $59

Now, I know I’ve written about this one before, but it really is that good.  GLAMGLOW has a cult following, and its for a reason.  Whether its one of their OG masks or one of the trendy bubble ones, they are always solid.

You can use this one two ways: as a spot treatment or as a full face mask.  This one is a little more harsh on my skin, so I tend to use it as a full mask no more than twice a week. But MAN does my skin look great afterwards.  It makes my skin so soft and also clears up any breakouts I have.  I literally get every last bit of product in the pot, and then go buy more.

PRO TIP: If you’re living the champagne dream on a bud light budget, get the mini size for only $25, especially if you don’t use it that often.

FRESH Umbrian Clay Pore Purifying Mask $58

This one I discovered after using my Sephora points for some tiny FRESH products (you know what I mean here).  I LOVE their toner and cleanser, so I figured their masks would be pretty good.  I used this one twice, and then went out and bought it.  It makes my skin really soft and gets all the nasty shit out of my pores.  Its not a mask that is particularly great at clearing up break outs, but its a really great cleansing mask.  Since this one is really gentle, you can actually use it every day.  I actually bought the smaller size, since I use it as an in between mask when my skin already looks decent, which is RARE.

Sephora Collection – Face Mask Applicator $8

Oh what is that thing in there with the masks, you ask? Why, its this wonderful thing called a face mask applicator.  For starters, it is extremely budget friendly, so that’s great.  It also helps you not get your masks all gross by using the silicon spatula end to remove the mask from its container and apply it.  You can also use it to get the last bit of product out of those little tiny jars.  The other end allows you to exfoliate and really get the product into your skin.  I tend to use it just for the spatula end, which has already been incredibly useful.  It is also SO EASY TO CLEAN.  I put on the mask, and then while it is doing its magic, I clean the applicator.  Two birds with one stone. Boom.

So, those are some of my faves. What am I missing out on?! What are the ones you can’t live without?! Let me know in the comments, loves.
